Tagetes is a genus of annual or perennial, mostly herbaceous plants in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was described as a genus by Linnaeus in 1753. The genus is native to North and South America, but some species have become naturalized around the world.
Marigolds are popular garden plants due to their bright, cheerful flowers. They are also used in companion planting as a pest deterrent in vegetable gardens. In some cultures, they are used extensively in festivals and ceremonies, such as Dia de los Muertos in Mexico.
