About the Carnation

The carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is a species of Dianthus native to the Mediterranean region. It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 80 cm tall. The flowers are produced singly or up to five together in a cyme; they are around 3–5 cm diameter, and sweetly scented.

Symbolism and Uses

Carnations are one of the most popular cut flowers, used frequently in flower arrangements, corsages, and boutonnieres. Different colors carry different meanings: red carnations symbolize love and admiration, white represents pure love and good luck, and pink carnations are associated with a mother's undying love, making them a popular Mother's Day gift.
